Recently using the newly developed high resolution linear array transducer, sonography of the prostate is useful modality for the diagnosis of prostatic disease, especially benign hyperplasia(BPH) and prostatic cancer.
BPH is common disease in aged men above the 50 years old, and prostatic cancer is 2nd or 3rd common cancer in adult men. These 2 disease should be differentiated early because of importance to determine the therapeutic or prognostic decision.
The author reviewed transrectal US findings of the 108 cases, which were confirmed clinically and pathologically during last year in our hospital.
The echogenicity of BPH were variable and may be heterogeneous. A lot of cases have nodules, which were mostly echogenic.
In conclusion, the improtant US finding of BPH is continuous margin of the prostatic capsule. Discontinuous capsule or hypoechogenic nodules suggesting malignancy. Therefore those cases are requiring biopsy or surgical confirmation.
